30 january 2012 — california trip update

Four partial days left, with limited time and range, the chances for sighting new species dims.

Possible but outside chances are of out of place, locally uncommon, or personal nemisis birds for San Diego this time of year:

Lawrence’s Goldfinch

Thick-billed Kingbird – *

Yellow-crowned Night Heron – *

Least Bittern

Clapper Rail

Costa’s Hummingbird

California Gnatcatcher

Wandering Tattler

(* birds were not on the original pre-planning hit list)

and maybe something that just shows up.

Anyway below is a list of the 179 species i’ve noted since crossing the border.  Those marked with a number 1 are new “lifers”.  Those marked with a number 2 are birds that are not lifers but have not been seen since i ended my 25 year birding hiatus.

27 lifers and 6 that are not new, but haven’t been seen in a LONG time.

San Diego County list stands at 165.  Original target was 150 – probably a sandbag number or just unambitious.
