Rainy October Day at Ridgefield NWR

Woke up with the ambition to go afield and went back to sleep with the sound of rain.  So i got a late start and decided to drive the River S loop at Ridgefield.

Saw my first Buffleheads of the season — love those birds and it is always a season highlight for me.  A lone Eurasian Widgeon was in the wetland beyond marker 11.  Too far out for any pictures however.  Swans are back.  A few Yellowlegs, a bunch of Siskins and Goldfinch feeding on Teasel seed, and ducks filling in the waterways.

Comments:     Off and on rainy day.  Stopped in to see if i could dig up some of the current rarities, Red-shouldered Hawk, Vermillion Flycatcher, or Black Phoebe — nope.  But i did find a lone male Eurasian Widgeon as a consolation prize.
36 species (+1 other taxa)

Cackling Goose  750     I did not pour over the multiple flocks but cursory scans produced only Ridgeway’s.  I did not see one Canada Goose all day.  But then i wasn’t looking real hard at the geese.  This time of year that’s all you would be doing if you took the time to count them.
Cackling Goose (minima)  X
Tundra Swan  175     Some reports of Trumpeter’s have been coming from here.  I took quite a bit of time at Rest Lake carefully scanning the three large collections of Swans.  Granted lot’s of them had their heads tucked under their wings, but of those that i did look at, none were Trumpeters.  One swan had a Blue neck collar with yellow code: P774.
